edge one can fish and have picnics.
Fly fishing itineraries
Itinerary 1: La Sterza
La Sterza is an enchanting current that runs behind the hills of Guardistallo
and Casale, and into Cecina loc. Casino di Terra. The clarity of the water,
the slow rythm of the stream, and the scarse profundity make this an optimum
water course for Fly fishing. Concentration and maximum silence of movements
are two indispensable requisites for the success of the catch. The itinerary
takes place at the end of the stream, between the bridge of the road for
Casale and the bridge of the road for Guardistallo.
Equipment
Seeing how the environment is somewhat restrictive, we advise the use
of a pole no longer than 7’ and a number 3-4 line. With rubber boot pants
it is possible to cover the entire area without having problems.

Bait
Even though it’s always better not to rely solely on artificial bait,
it seems as though this specific water course works well with small flies
of light color. We advise the use of lion, blue Dune and March Brown mounted
on a 14. If there’s still isn’t much activity on the surface it might be
useful to try using a good Red Spinner.
Itinerary 2: La Steccaia
This is a great place to launch, flyfishing or spinning. The type of
fish in this area (about 20 cm long) and the comfort of easily reached spots,
makes for a long relaxing day where one can hang out in the peace and quiet
with family.
Equipment
For fly fishing it is advisable to use an 8’ rod (240cm), tail #2-3,
length reaching over 9’. For spinning we recommend a 6’-7’ rod (180-210
cm) that takes off in small spurts, together with a 0,16-0,18 cord. In both
cases, normal rubber thigh high boots are sufficient.
Bait
Any type of bait can be used for fly fishing. It is advisable to use
small and dark flies during hot periods, especially on summer evenings,
while it’s better to use bigger flies, even with see through colorations,
during the winter time. For spinning it’s better to use small rotating spoons,
silver or golden that have a good catch year round. If the water, however,
is crystal clear and clean it would be wise to use small minnnows (3-5 cm)with
natural coloring.
